The Ancient Gear archetype has been a fan favorite since its introduction in Yu-Gi-Oh! Animated GX. It is one of the few archetypes that several characters in the series have used, being also featured extensively during Arc V.
In the paper game, Ancient Gear is a popular archetype that still enjoys support to this day. Duel Links players are no strangers to the power of Ancient Gear, and in Master Duel they have many more toys to play with. Ancient Gear decks generally want to make a big monster and hit hard, and that’s something the deck can do easily.
ten Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem
Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem is the first Fusion Monster in the Ancient Gear line, largely due to its huge statline. It is very difficult for most monsters to resist a 4400 attack monster, which allows Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem to defeat almost all monsters in the game.
Monsters in defense stance are not safe, as Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem will deal piercing damage if it attacks one. It will also close any backrow while attacking. If destroyed by any means, you can revive an ancient gear golem from your graveyard.
9 antique gear box
Ancient Gear Box is a card you will almost always look for when looking for an Ancient Gear card. Each time it is added to the hand from the deck or the Graveyard, you can add another Earth Machine monster from your deck to your hand as long as it has 500 or less attack or defense.
This allows Ancient Gear Box to essentially give you two searches for the price of one. Although Ancient Gear Box doesn’t do much else after adding it, it can be used for fusion summons. Many Ancient Gear Fusion monsters need multiple Ancient Gear monsters, and Ancient Gear Box helps you get all the necessary tools.
8 Ancient Equipment Catapult
At first glance, Ancient Gear Catapult might seem like a high cost for a relatively simple effect. By destroying a face-up card you control, you can Special Summon any Ancient Gear monster from your deck, ignoring its Summoning conditions. This guarantees you’ll get one monster, but since most spell cards special summon a monster when destroyed, you’ll usually end up with two.
In the graveyard, Ancient Gear Catapult can earn you a token by banishing itself and destroying a face-up card to help summon a tribute. It can even trigger some of your other effects that trigger after being destroyed.
7 antique equipment hunting dog
Ancient Gear Hunting Hound is one of the main ways to fusion summon your Ancient Gear monsters. On the field, Ancient Gear Hunting Hound allows you to perform a fusion summon using materials from your field and your hand.
When normally summoned, you even get a small 600 burn damage done to your opponent. There aren’t many spectacular normal summons in the Ancient Gear archetype, and with Ancient Gear Hunting Hound, you don’t have to dig for a fusion spell to make an OTK that much easier.
6 Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon
A name that Duel Links players will be particularly familiar with, Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon is the main monster in the main deck of the Ancient Gear archetype. It has a solid attack stat of 3000 and when attacking, Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon fully locks the back line. After attacking, he can destroy any Spell or Trap card on the field.
This effect is especially good in Ancient Gear decks, as it can cause cards to appear that special summon more monsters to the field. Ancient Gear Reactor Dragon can chain itself into other copies of itself, quickly flooding the board with powerful monsters you can use for Extra Deck games.
5 Fusion of old equipment
Fusion spells aren’t usually fantastic because you need all the readily available materials in your hand to use them. However, Ancient Gear Fusion can bypass this restriction and use materials directly from your deck, which is the best effect a fusion spell can have.
As long as you use an Ancient Gear Golem or an Ancient Gear Golem – Ultimate Pound you control as material, you can use material from your deck for the Fusion Summon. Ancient Gear decks have no trouble meeting these criteria and that’s what makes Ancient Gear Fusion such a great fusion spell for the archetype.
4 Ancient Equipment Ballista
Ancient Gear Balista is the only Link monster in the Ancient Gear line, and a great one at that. Geartown is an incredibly important part of the Ancient Gear lineup, so having a seeker outside of Terraforming is fantastic. Ancient Gear Balista also lets you destroy both your own and opponent’s cards, triggering Ancient Gear effects while dismantling your opponent’s land.
It’s also very easy to craft, requiring only two Earth Machine monsters, without even needing Ancient Gear monsters for its Link Summon. Ancient Gear Balista does pretty much everything Ancient Gears needs to do to boot, all on one map.
3 Ancient Equipment Frame
Ancient Gear Frame is one of the main seekers of the archetype. When discarding a card, he will search your deck for an Ancient Gear Golem or any Spell or Trap card that lists it in its text.
If it leaves the field by an opponent’s effect, Ancient Gear Frame allows you to flood the field with Ancient Gear Golems and Ancient Gear Golem – Ultimate Pounds, up to three of them while ignoring their conditions of summoning. Ancient Gear Frame does a lot for a single card, and that makes it a scary card to try to get rid of with its special summon effect.
2 Ancient Wyvern Gear
Ancient Gear Wyvern is the main normal summon of the Ancient Gear archetype. Whenever summoned, Ancient Gear Wyvern lets you add any Ancient Gear card from your deck to your hand. Whenever he attacks, Ancient Gear Wyvern also stops Backrow during the damage step.
Ancient Gear Wyvern is one of the main reasons the deck works. It lets you search any Ancient Gear map except Geartown, and lets you easily configure your OTK to find missing parts of your combo pieces.
Geartown is one of the most important pieces in any Ancient Gear deck. This allows both players to summon Ancient Gear monsters for one less tribute. You probably won’t be playing an Ancient Gear mirror match, so it will almost never affect your opponent.
Geartown’s most important effect is the one it has to special summon an Ancient Gear monster from your deck, graveyard, or hand if it’s destroyed. This is the main target to destroy with your own cards to do a search. Be careful though, since this is a “when” effect, it can get out of sync if it’s not the first effect in a chain.
