HOUSTON –Houston Police Department homicide detectives say the situation unfolding on the southwest side of Houston quickly escalated into a murder investigation.
As they work to locate those responsible, the victim’s best friend tells KPRC 2 that he too is hoping for answers.
“I’m devastated,” said Ryan Robinson. “They `re my best friend.”
Robinson is talking about 34-year-old father-of-two Ezenna Ukuchukwu, whom he identified as the man who police say was shot dead at a City Gear clothing store in the 1100 block of Fondren.
The shooting took place around 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening.
Robinson says Ukuchukwu was recently promoted to manager.
“He didn’t deserve this,” Robinson said. The HPD released photos of the male suspects.
One wore a tan hoodie and the other a black hoodie with an image of the Naruto character on the back.
Investigators say the duo attempted to shoplift and, after a confrontation with the manager, made their way to a silver 4-door sedan parked outside.
They say one of them pulled out a gun and fired several bullets.
“I just saw a lot of lights, the whole parking lot was filled from here to there with police cars, a few ambulances, the crime scene van,” said Paula Henry who works nearby.
Investigators say the director was punched multiple times and pronounced dead at the scene.
“I cried all night,” Robinson said. “Do you see me? I’m here all alone, trying to find out what’s going on because no one wants to tell me.
