Metal Gear Creator Hideo Kojima Considers Legal Action Over Abe Assassin’s Fake Posts

Hideo Kojima, developer of the Metal Gear Solid game series and Death Strandingwas the subject of social media posts falsely accusing him of being involved in the shooting of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The accused shooter was arrested after the violent act and has no connection to Kojima.

The famous game developer is now threatening legal action over these false claims. Kojima’s game studio, Kojima Productions, tweeted on Saturday that he is considering legal action over the false messages.

“#KojimaProductions strongly condemns the spread of fake news and rumors that convey false information,” the studio tweeted on Saturday. “We do not tolerate such defamation and will consider taking legal action in some cases.”

Abe was shot and killed on Friday while delivering a campaign speech in the city of Nara, 40 minutes east of Osaka, Japan. Police arrested Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, at the scene. He would have been charged with murder.

Shortly after the shooting, people on an anonymous picture board 4chan began circulating a photo of the alleged shooter and falsely identified him as Kojima. The fake posts spread to other social media sites and news outlets in Greece and Iran allegedly sharing inaccurate information.

Police are reportedly continuing to investigate the motive for the shooting. Abe served as Prime Minister of Japan twice. He held the position for a year in 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020.
