Why do the Boston Celtics wear #24 on their jerseys?

Celtics pay tribute to legendary Sam Jones

But why? Well, it’s in honor of former Celtic Sam Jones, who won 10 championships with Boston and was an integral part of their iconic dynasty.

Jones played with the Celtics from 1957-58 to 1968-69. The shooter never lost a Game 7 playoff, and his No. 24 was retired by the Celtics in 1969 — where he hangs in the rafters today.

Jones was the first black basketball player to be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. In 1996, he was named one of the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players of All Time.

Sadly, Jones passed away on December 30, 2021 at the age of 88. At the time, they held a minute’s silence for Jones before the game against the Phoenix Suns.

2022 could be a special year for the Celtics

The 2022 Boston Celtics have a chance to replicate some of the success Jones has had with the franchise.

Despite facing the heavily favored Brooklyn Nets in the first round of players, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart got to see Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving.

The Celtics are one of the toughest and bravest defensive units in the league and in Ime Udoka they have one of the brightest young coaches in the league.

Defeating Giannis and the Bucks won’t be easy, but the Celtics are certainly capable of it.

Game 4 takes place in Milwaukee tonight (May 9).
